Early College High School

Early College High School is a model of schooling that merges high school and college experiences for students in Grades 9-13, targeting students underrepresented in college (low-income, first-generation, underrepresented minorities). Students attend small schools of choice located primarily on community college campuses, begin taking college courses as early as ninth grade, and by junior/senior year take mostly college courses while interacting with college students. The model expects students to graduate with both a high school diploma and an associate degree or 2 years of college credit in 4-5 years instead of the typical 6 years. The program requires all students to take an honors-level college preparatory high school curriculum and provides rigorous instruction emphasizing critical thinking, extensive writing, cooperative work, and class discussion. Schools provide explicit instruction in time management, note-taking, study skills, and self-advocacy with college faculty. Students receive coaching through college navigation processes including class selection and registration, identifying college resources, and using online course materials. Schools provide comprehensive academic and affective supports and explicit assistance with college applications and financial aid.
