Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) for Story Writing

About the Intervention

Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) is an instructional intervention designed to improve story writing for at-risk second-grade students, including children with disabilities. Students learn strategies for planning and drafting stories using mnemonic devices (POW: Pick My Ideas, Organize My Notes, Write and Say More; and WWW, What = 2, How = 2 for the 7 story elements). The intervention is delivered individually in 30-45 minute sessions outside the regular classroom over 6-8 sessions. Students are taught to plan stories by generating ideas for each story element (who, when, where, what characters want to do, what happens, how it ends, how characters feel), use self-regulation procedures (self-instructions, goal setting, self-monitoring, self-reinforcement), and understand story structure. Instruction is criterion-based and scaffolded, with students progressing through stages: Develop Background Knowledge, Discuss It, Model It, Support It, and Independent Performance. Teachers need training in the SRSD model and detailed lesson plans to implement the intervention with fidelity.
