I CAN Learn®

2017

I CAN Learn® is a computer-based math curriculum for students in middle school, high school, and college, focusing on courses including Fundamentals of Math and Pre-Algebra for the primary mathematics level. Students work individually at their own computers through a series of interactive lessons presented by a virtual teacher. Each lesson includes a warm-up activity, lesson presentation, guided practice, and a quiz to ensure mastery before progressing. Students move at their own pace and must demonstrate mastery of each concept before advancing. Classroom teachers may provide individual, small-group, or whole-class instruction based on students' performance on the software program. Students typically start with a placement test to assess their current knowledge level and customize their lesson plan. The curriculum contains 20 to 180 self-paced, mastery-based lessons with multimedia content including instructional videos and animation. Printed textbooks are available to supplement the electronic courseware. Teachers use the I CAN Learn® Classroom Explorer Class Management System to track students' attendance, homework, and test grades, create individualized learning paths, and generate reports. Implementation requires classrooms equipped with desks, computer equipment, and electrical connectivity. Varying support plans including training, professional development, curriculum alignments, implementation planning, and pedagogical support are available.

Project CRISS® (CReating Independence through Student-owned Strategies)

2010

Project CRISS® (CReating Independence through Student-owned Strategies) is a professional development program for teachers that aims to improve reading, writing, and learning for 3rd- through 12th-grade students. The program does not require changes to existing curriculum or materials but instead focuses on changing teaching style to incorporate three primary concepts: students monitoring their learning, integrating new information with prior knowledge, and being actively involved through discussing, writing, organizing information, and analyzing text structure. Teachers incorporate these concepts through comprehension strategies such as using background knowledge, questioning, organizing graphically, and summarizing. Teachers receive 12 to 24 hours of Level I training to prepare them to incorporate CRISS principles and strategies into the classroom, with follow-up support including on-site visits, demonstration lessons, newsletters, and computer network assistance.

Reading Plus®

2010

Reading Plus® is a web-based reading intervention designed for students in grade 3 and higher that uses technology to provide individualized scaffolded silent reading practice. The program aims to develop and improve students' silent reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary by adjusting the difficulty of content and duration of reading activities so students proceed at a pace corresponding to their reading skill level. The intervention includes differentiated reading activities, computer-based reading assessments, tools to monitor student progress, ongoing implementation support, and supplemental offline activities. Within a typical 45-minute session, students engage in visual perceptual warm-up activities, scaffolded silent reading activities that dynamically adjust content-level difficulty, and contextual analysis activities to build vocabulary and inferential abilities. The program length can vary from 9 weeks (3-4 times per week) to 30 weeks (5 times per week). Teachers are provided guidelines for organizing small-group and whole-group comprehension skills instruction using offline assignments that target identified deficiencies.

Reading Mastery

2013

Reading Mastery is a systematic reading instruction curriculum designed for students in grades K-6, available in three versions (Classic, Plus, and Signature Edition). The program can be used as an intervention for struggling readers, a supplement to core reading programs, or as a stand-alone reading program. Students are grouped by reading level based on placement tests. Typical lessons last 30-45 minutes and include 7-9 short activities covering phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, word recognition, vocabulary, oral reading fluency, and comprehension. The teaching routine involves modeling new content, guided practice, and individual practice. Lesson scripts guide teachers, and signals and group responses keep students engaged. The program typically spans one academic year. Teachers participate in training prior to implementation and receive ongoing consultations. Student materials include storybooks or textbooks, workbooks, and test books, while teaching materials include lesson scripts and various supplemental components.

Read Naturally

2013

Read Naturally is a supplemental reading program that aims to improve reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension of students in elementary, middle, or high school using a combination of texts, audio CDs, and computer software. The program uses one of four products (Masters Edition, Encore, Software Edition, or Live) that share a common fluency-building strategy including: modeling of story reading, repeated reading of text for developing oral reading fluency, and systematic monitoring of student progress by teachers and students themselves. Students work at their reading level, progress through the program at their own rate, and work independently. The program can be delivered in three ways: students use audio CDs with hard-copy reading materials, students use the computer-based version, or students use the web-based version. Each product includes a teacher's manual with program rationale, descriptions of materials needed, instructions for implementing the program, and lesson plans for introducing the program to students. Teacher training is available at an additional cost.

Read Well

2010

Read Well is a reading curriculum for kindergarten and first-grade students whose goal is to increase students' literacy abilities. The program provides instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency through scaffolded instruction, where teachers begin by presenting models and gradually decrease their support by providing guided practice before students complete skills independently. The program combines daily whole class activities with small group lessons. Students receive a minimum of 90 minutes of daily instruction, with pacing dependent on the level of mastery for each individual participant. The Read Well instructor package includes all teacher materials and one set of student materials necessary for implementing the program in a classroom. A professional development program is available for teachers interested in using the curriculum.

Repeated Reading

2014

Repeated reading is an academic practice that aims to increase oral reading fluency for students in grades 5-12 who have developed initial word reading skills but demonstrate inadequate reading fluency for their grade level. During repeated reading, a student sits in a quiet location with a teacher and reads a passage aloud at least three times. Typically, the teacher selects a passage of about 50 to 200 words in length. If the student misreads a word or hesitates for longer than 5 seconds, the teacher reads the word aloud, and the student repeats the word correctly. If the student requests help with a word, the teacher reads the word aloud or provides the definition. The student rereads the passage until he or she achieves a satisfactory fluency level. Teachers can vary the criterion for progression, instructional settings, purpose, materials, modalities, length of passage, and feedback provided on reading errors.

Success for All

2017

Success for All (SFA) is a whole-school reform model for students in prekindergarten through grade 8 that integrates curriculum, school culture, family, and community supports. The literacy program emphasizes phonics for beginning readers and comprehension for all students. Teachers provide reading instruction to students grouped by reading ability for 90 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Students in prekindergarten through first grade participate in Reading Roots, and students in second grade and above participate in Reading Wings. In both programs, students are grouped into reading classes of 15-20 students with others of similar reading ability regardless of age or grade level. Teachers begin the period by reading children's storybooks aloud, then discuss with students to enhance understanding. In kindergarten and first grade, teachers emphasize developing language skills using phonetic storybooks and instruction focusing on phonemic awareness, auditory discrimination, and sound blending. In second through fifth grades, teachers use school- or district-provided reading materials in structured interactive activities where students read, discuss, and write about books, emphasizing cooperative learning activities built around partner reading. Certified teachers or paraprofessionals provide daily tutoring to students who have difficulty reading at the same level as their classmates. The program includes quarterly assessments, a social-emotional development program, computer-assisted tutoring tools, family support teams, a facilitator who works with school personnel, and extensive training for all intervention teachers. School staff in their first year receive 3-day summer training and 12 additional on-site support days during the school year, with developer-provided trainers visiting and observing teachers monthly in the first year and less often thereafter.
